Vitamin D-A-D: Top 10 Convertibles to Keep Dad Happy
To celebrate Father’s Day, we’ve collected a list of 10 cars that should keep dad happy. Not only are the following set of wheels fun to drive, but they have tops that fold away (or come off), giving dad plenty of access to sunlight, which happens to be a great way to replenish your body’s vitamin D levels. And as any good doctor will tell you, vitamin D is important in maintaining good mood and health. That said, check out our list of cars that combine plenty of horsepower and sunlight and let us know what you’d pick for dad.
2013 Chevrolet Corvette 427 – If your dad is a Corvette fan then he should appreciate the 427 edition. The 427 is a special-edition model that commemorates the ‘Vette’s 60th birthday and serves as a last hurrah for the C6. As the name suggests, it’s powered by the Z06’s 427-cubic-inch (427.6 cubic-inches to be exact) 7.0-liter LS7 V-8 making 505 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.
2013 Jaguar XKR – Yes, the XKR-S is the one we covet, but good luck finding one that’s still available (just over 100 made it to our shores). The XKR, however, is much more attainable, but still packs plenty of power from its 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 rated at 510 hp. It’s also an excellent and comfortable cruiser, just in case dad decides to take a spontaneous and extended road trip.
2013 Mini Cooper S Roadster – If the Jag is a bit too pricey for dad, then consider this British two-seater. Though its turbo-four only makes 181 hp, its sporty chassis and light curb weight could help the Mini keep up with far more powerful drop-tops on winding roads.
2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S – Snowy climes shouldn’t deter anyone from top-down fun. Thank Porsche for producing the 911 4S, which has all-wheel-drive grip that’s beneficial whether the road is dry or layered with the white stuff. The 4S convertible is nimble and quick, running from 0-60 mph in around four-and-a-half seconds thanks to its 400-hp 3.8-liter boxer-six.
2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Roadster – Sure, the gullwing doors on the coupe are cool, but it doesn’t take long to show them off. The roadster, on the hand, will give dad hours of top-down magic, with the 583-hp 6.2-liter V-8 providing some of the best background noise to come from an AMG engine.
2013 Audi A5 – The Audi isn’t as over-the-top (or expensive) as the other Germans on this list, and some dads out there should be perfectly fine with that. In addition to its handsome sheetmetal, the 2.0-liter turbo-four makes 211 hp — or 220 hp for the 2014 model year — but is plenty strong. Other pluses include seating for four and optional all-wheel drive.
2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited - If you like the idea of heading to the Great Outdoors to bond with your old man, consider the 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited as one of the most capable off-roaders to get you guys there. Opt for the Rubicon model if you plan to traverse challenging trails. Don’t forget to drop the soft top and spot each other around those tricky boulders.
2013 BMW M3 – Is your dad a bit of a perfectionist who wants a convertible that’s nearly flawless on and off the track? With an interior that’s not too fussy, but still luxurious and has room for four? With a retractable hardtop to add piece of mind while said convertible is parked in a shady part of town? Can you think of a better convertible for him than a BMW M3? We can’t either.
2013 Ferrari 458 Italia Spider – The 458 Italia coupe won our 2011 Best Driver’s Car competition, leaving little doubt that this Prancing Horse is one of the most fun set of wheels money can buy. But spending a bit more cash for the 458 Italia Spider will ensure dad can drive fast and soak up the rays at the same time, making for a truly special and smile-inducing experience behind the wheel.
2014 Ford Mustang GT - If dad favors simpler things in life, it’s hard to argue against the Mustang GT. And just because it’s simple doesn’t mean it’s slow. The GT Premium coupe variant (420 hp from a 5.0-liter V-8) we recently tested rocketed from 0-60 mph in just over four seconds, placing it among sports cars costing twice or even three times as much.
What car would you recommend for your dad?
